ABOUT THIS WORK:

In this work, the parents, represented and united in each vertical strand, stand as a central support. The patterns form a set of triangles – a symbol of strength. The mother’s pattern, displayed as the top triangle and the bottom triangle, symbolize both a foundation or root, and the canopy or shade.

The father’s pattern shown as the left and right triangles to me symbolize a boundary, protection, or safe arms around the family.

Both children interact and weave with each parent throughout the work. Rather than weaving the children’s patterns together, I chose to place them side by side. Always near one another. The negative space between their strands symbolizes room to explore, expand and grow into the people they wish to become; one day on a path independent from their parents, but always rooted in their foundation.

Perhaps my favorite detail about this work –
although each pattern was painted on different shapes and sizes of linen panels – the total area represented for each individual member of your family is of equal size.
